Eiríkur Benedikz Icelandic Collection

Title: Eiríkur Benedikz Icelandic Collection

Description: The Eiríkur Benedikz Icelandic Collection extends the University Library's collection of books and journals in Norse, Icelandic and Viking Studies. The Benedikz Collection fills gaps in the general collection and adds whole series, which lie within the category of Special Collections because of their rarity or specialised nature. Items from the Collection have been placed in a number of locations in the Library: in the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections, on the open shelves on Level 4 of the Hallward Library, and in the closed-access Store.

Concepts: Old Norse language ; Old Norse literature ; Sagas ; Rímur ; Old Norse literature - History and criticism ; Iceland - Description and travel ; Iceland - History ; Civilization, Viking ; Vikings.

Strength: The Benedikz Collection is particularly rich in Old Icelandic manuscript facsimiles. The early printed books include fine examples of rare early saga editions. The Collection contains a number of notable items in the genre of travel writing from the eighteenth and nineteenth century. There are also many examples of biographical works and genealogies. Most notably, the Collection contains an exceptional range of Icelandic literature written after the medieval Golden Age. Eiríkur Benedikz specialised in collecting editions of rímur, a uniquely Icelandic poetic genre that was copiously produced and popular from the thirteenth to the twentieth century.
