Title: Old Icelandic Collection

Description: The English Faculty Library holds printed collections (approximately 8000 volumes including books and journals) and two manuscripts pertaining to the study of Old Norse-Icelandic language and literature. These are housed in several faculty rooms adjacent to the Library in the St Cross Building. Languages: Danish, English, German, Latin.

Strength: The core lending collection has benefited by the addition of: the personal library of the late Professor E.O.G. (Gabriel) Turville-Petre (1908-1978), Professor of Ancient Icelandic Literature & Antiquities, Oxford University, 1953-1975; the W.P. Ker (1855-1923) Collection, comprising approximately 700 volumes (including some important antiquarian material) on permanent loan from All Souls; the York Powell Collection, approximately 1200 volumes from the libraries of Guðbrandur Vígfússon (1827-1889) and Frederick York Powell (1850-1904) (including many rare items from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Scandinavian and German editions and critical works) on permanent loan from Christ Church.

Sub-collection: The collection includes a lending collection plus the Turville-Petre, York Powell and W.P. Ker Collections.

Catalogue: All titles are included in OLIS, the Oxford Libraries Information System.

Accrual status: Active, to support teaching and research within the University. Purchase and deposit. Periodic.

Access control: Mainly closed access and reference only, although a substantial lending collection (in the Turville-Petre Room) is available to those reading and teaching Old Icelandic at Oxford. External readers with a genuine research need are welcome to use the collection at any time by prior appointment with the Librarian. Opening hours for the English Faculty Library are listed online.
