Subject gateway: Search help

The subject gateway enables scholars to identify from a single point the location of much of the information they need. The gateway includes descriptions of all the partner libraries' Icelandic collections and links to relevant web sites world wide. These sites are likely to include university departments and institutes which specialise in the field, publishers, and societies. As well as the academic interest in Icelandic studies, there is also considerable popular interest and accordingly there are sites of a less serious nature.

To find subject resources you can either:

  • browse by resource title
    • select a resource from the drop down box and press the display button
  • browse by subject
    • select a subject from the drop down box and press the browse button
  • search resource titles, descriptions and contributors
    • type a search term in the search box and press the search button
      • you can use plain text or special characters
eg "Fornaldarsogur Nordurlanda" is equivalent to "Fornaldarsögur Noršurlanda"
      • you can use * as a wildcard
      • you can use the options Any / All to specify the type of keyword matching

Remember: you are not searching the actual resources - just their titles (and descriptions)!

Example searches

Keywords: Find: Results:
norse medieval All Resources whose titles/descriptions contain norse and medieval
norse medieval Any Resources whose titles/descriptions contain norse or medieval
iceland* Any Resources whose titles/descriptions contain Iceland, Icelandic, etc

If your search is unsuccessful you may wish to try:

  • searching for just part of a word or phrase (eg 'Brit*' for Britain, British, etc)
  • searching using the any keywords option
